Plaza Clean-Up!

If you’ve been down to The Plaza recently you know that it’s a pig sty. A quick look around will treat your eyes to a sweeping panorama of urban detritus… sticker backs, candy packages, dirty rigs, paper cups, syringe packaging, plastic bags, burnt garbage, sketchy-looking and faintly aromatic discoloured portions of ground… it’s enough to make you think the place was just four or five blocks from Main and Hastings. This isn’t a good thing because: a) falling on the ground at a skatepark shouldn’t be a health-endangering experience, and b) the idea that The Plaza would turn into an unofficial garbage dump was and continues to be one of the main concerns of the park’s most vocal and motivated opponents. However you want to look at it, keeping The Plaza clean makes a lot of sense. As such, the Vancouver Skateboard Coalition is doing a clean-up there on Monday, so anyone and everyone who skates The Plaza should come down and help out. We’ll be there at 7PM on Monday, September 10th and will be armed with rubber gloves, garbage bags, a pressure washer, and a few of those robo-claw trash-picker-upper things that you often see wielded by people who are doing their community service on the side of the highway.

YAY you are back! And I hope that is not a real photo of the ground at the Plaza.

Hey!
Appararently the cleanup is off – done by Lance and Alex from Underworld – so no need to go down there. But I was thinking, it would be cool to a China Creek cleanup – we were down there for the Jaks comp, which was rad, and it looks like it could use a good clean. Anybody in?

Hello VSPC:
As a Park Board management staff person, mainly doing parks garbage duty during the strike, let me say how much we appreciate your stewardship efforts. Thank you, thank you.
